video art

video art
The term ‘video art’ refers to recordings by fine artists on videotape plus sculptures and installations. In its early days in the late 1960s and early 1970s, video art explored its own construction and toyed with the medium itself. In Britain, artists’ video only appeared on television arts programmes in the 1980s. Video’s capacity to time-shift and to mirror spectators led to a range of innovative installations in galleries as well as the arrays of monitors that eventually became standard backdrops on television programmes like Clive James on TV. Artists such as Gilbert and George, Mick Harvey, Susan Hiller and Catherine Elwes have used the medium. The term also covers television art, video sculpture, street video or guerrilla television.
